You must already have heard about the flora and fauna of Madagascar that are one of the biggest tourist attractions of the country?

In this article, we would like to tell you more particularly about the several kinds of birds that you will not find somewhere else but in Madagascar. And we would also like to invite you to come and discover them in their natural housing environments, during your next trip!

So if you want to take advantage at its best of the ornithological discovery on the red island, and create yourself some more of unforgettable memories during your stay, you would better plan your trip between the end of September and mid-December. In that period indeed, more than hundred different endemic kinds of birds cross natural reserves, and more generally, the whole island, from the north to the south. So you would be able to discover all along your trip, many rare birds with uncountable - and sometimes - unbelievable and breathtaking colors. Plus, it is also in that period that migratory birds of Africa fly to the Malagasy sky and come to reproduce on the island!

Among the rare birds that you will be able to discover, the “most popular” are the Greater Vasa Parrot (coracopsis vasa), Lesser Vasa Parrot (coracopsis nigra), the grey-headed lovebird, the heron, or the egret…

If you are a professional ornithologist, you will be able to admire closely:

  • The Benson’s Rock-Thrush, that you will see while discovering at the same time the magnificent window of the Isalo, in the south of the island
  • Appert’s Tetraka (Xanthomixis apperti)
  • Sakalava rail  (Amaurornis olivieri)
  • Madagascar Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis bernieri)
  • Madagascar Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vociferoides)

Otherwise, according to your preferences and to your desires, you will also be able to discover the birds by regions: those of the forests; those of the lakes, swamps and the ocean; those of the highlands and the savanna; and those of the cities or villages.

During your next stay, if you mean to dedicate it entirely to the discovery of the endemic birds of Madagascar, you should plan approximately a 3 weeks trip. So you will be able to visit the main sites which shelter them: Ankarafantsika National Park (Majunga, towards the west coast), The complex of Mahavavy kinkony, Zombitse Vohibasia National Park (RN7), Tsimanapesotse National Park , the forests of the Big South of the island, Ranomafana National Park, Masoala National Park.

In conclusion, among the thousand and one things that are worth seeing in Madagascar, the discovery of rare birds is unmistakably one of them. And more than the half of the kinds of birds that we can see on the island are endemic ones (about 300 listed kinds and 110 endemic kinds)!

With the SOMACRAM, you can chose stays that are more or less directed to the birds’ discovery. We can indeed propose you classic tours during which you will among other things, discover the main species of Malagasy rare birds. So it will be up to you to decide…but in every case, you can be sure that we will definitely not let you leave the country without having contemplated in its sky, at least the most popular endemic birds of Madagascar!
